Twitter is the latest social networking site to gain mainstream popularity around the world. Each user on Twitter can post short text updates, up to 140 characters long, known as tweets. It has also been referred to as a micro-blogging site, as it performs the same function as blogs in updating people on a person's daily thoughts and happenings but within much briefer text.
Tweets are delivered to people who have signed up to follow the user. Tweets can be accessed by a restricted group, such as family or friends, or by anyone. You can choose when to start and when to stop following people's tweets. You can even set a "quiet time" in which you will not receive any tweets. You can send your tweets from the Twitter website, your mobile phone or from third party applications.
Celebrities have joined in the tweeting. British comedian Stephen Fry had the most followers for a while, but those with the most followers are currently reported to be Ashton Kutcher, Ellen DeGeneres and Britney Spears.
You can do a search on any topic to see what people are tweeting about, assuming they have allowed their tweets to be accessed by anyone. You do not need to be a member to access them either - simply type in your keywords on the home page and click on "Search".
If you do want to have your own page on Twitter and send out your tweets, you need to be a member. To join Twitter, sign up here.
