Established in 1967 by the Federal Government, it is one of the nation's leading galleries. It currently holds over 120,000 works of art.
Normal opening hours are 10am – 5pm. General admission is free.

McCubbin: Last Impressions 1907 - 1917
Frederick McCubbin is one of the most famous Australian impressionists. This exhibition covers the works he produced after visiting JMW Turner and Claude Monet in London. They include a diverse range of Australian paintings, including images of the city and the bush, interiors and portraits.
On display 14 August - 1 November. Paid entry.
The National Musuem of Australia
Officially opened in its new building in 2001, it holds permanent exhibitions tracing Indigenous Australia's 50,000 year history, white settlement since 1788 and key events during this time, including Federation and both World Wars.

A Fine Yarn: Innovations in Australia's Wool Industry
Featuring 40 objects including traditional and contemporary superfine wool garments, a prizewinning fleece, photographs and archival footage of the top wool fashions from the 50s - 70s, this exhibition explores the innovation of Australia's wool industry in relation to its importance to our social and economic history.
On display 22 July - 8 November. Free entry.
Voyages of the Pacific Ancestors: Vaka Moana
This exhibition traces the dramatic story of humans settling the Pacific Islands. More than 100 objects and multimedia presentations reveal how the ancestors of the Pacific Islanders migrated south over 4,000 years ago.
On display 5 June - 18 October. Free entry.
From Little Things Big Things Grow
Through the presentation of personal stories, historical objects and archival media materials, visitors learn the story of how a group of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians fought together for justice and equal rights for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from 1920 to 1970.
